Performance Measurement Platform (PMP)

PMP was initially created to support multi-domain network performance monitoring across the NREN and GÉANT networks. It was designed to provide a lightweight, low-cost deployment model to allow NRENs to accurately monitor the performance of the GÉANT backbone from the perspective of end-users.

This aim has been achieved with great success and many NRENs deployed their own instances of perfSONAR. Meanwhile, the needs of the GÉANT community have also evolved and the deployment landscape has changed. The use of cloud and virtual host-based nodes has reduced the need for dedicated hardware and software for PMP implementation and so it has been decided to integrate the functions of PMP directly into the perfSONAR suite.

What it means for you

What is changing

  • PMP will no longer exist as a GÉANT standalone service
  • The platform will become part of the broader perfSONAR service and will be used as a means of evaluation and testing of perfSONAR development for the GÉANT community
  • The development focus will shift to enhancing the wider perfSONAR experience to increase functionality of the overall monitoring system.

What stays the same

  • The perfSONAR nodes and regular testing functionality you rely on remains available
  • You can still join the mesh with your own host at any time. Feel free to get in touch with the team.
  • The central measurement archive and infrastructure will remain operational
  • The PMP Grafana dashboard will continue to be accessible here
  • User support continues unchanged, now as part of the perfSONAR service

This transition ensures continuity of the infrastructure with minimal impact on the current status and introduces a more robust and maintainable model that allows ongoing perfSONAR development and innovation.
